Aftercare

Tattoo aftercare is a crucial aspect of the tattooing process, significantly influencing the final outcome and longevity of your ink. Proper care not only ensures a vibrant and well-defined tattoo but also plays a key role in preventing complications and promoting swift healing.

The First Day

Healing Process

Leave the second skin bandage ( Z Wrap) on for at least 24 hours. Try to keep it on for initially 2 days, then 4-6 days if given a second sheet.

(Only remove bandage early if skin feels irritated/uncomfortable, and immediately wash tattoo after removal)

Start by warming a cloth towel with water to a temperature to which you can stand the heat. Leave it on like a temporary tattoo for about 5-10 mins.

Remove the loosened bandage in the shower, and gently wash with unscented soap. Air dry as much as possible. Pat to dry if still wet. Reapply a second bandage if given.

After 24 hours of bandage removal, keep an eye for peeling or scabbing.

Apply moisturizer/ unscented lotion ( I recommend AfterInked) once a day IF needed. (Apply in dime sized amounts. Do not over moisturize)

Do NOT pick or scratch at your healing tattoo. (It will get itchy!)

Keep your tattoo as dry as you can while healing. Showering is totally fine, just don’t soak or scrub it. No baths. No swimming. No jacuzzi’s.

Special Attention

Stay out of the sun while your tattoo is healing. NO tanning.

NO SWIMMING

*Do NOT apply sunscreen on a healing tattoo*

(however, using sunscreen once the tattoo is healed is an excellent way to keep the tattoo looking fresh! The sun will damage/fade your tattoo over the years, so the more sunscreen, the better!)

Do not re-bandage the tattoo while its healing.

KEEP IT CLEAN  :)

INSTRUCTIONS

Post-Tattoo Care:

  1. A sterile piece of second skin or bandage wrap is placed over your new tattoo. This is to help protect the skin from any dust or germs you might encounter throughout the rest of your day and also gives your pores a chance to close up a little. Your artist will give you a suggested time to remove the bandage – anywhere from 24-72 hours.

  2. Once you have removed the wrap, wash your tattoo with mild soap and warm water, using your inner palm near the thumb pad to gently massage any excess glide/ ointment or ink from the skin. There may also be some dry blood, plasma or water excretions – this is completely normal.

  3. Once you have rinsed off all the soap, pat your tattoo dry using a paper towel as cloth towels can hold bacteria.

  4. NEVER RE-WRAP YOUR TATTOO. Unless directed by your artist to do so with appropriate bandaging materials.

Importance of Aftercare:

  1. Preserves Vibrancy: Following aftercare instructions helps maintain the vibrancy and clarity of your tattoo by preventing fading and color distortion.

  2. Prevents Infections: Keeping your tattoo clean and moisturized reduces the risk of infections. The open skin during the healing process is susceptible to bacteria, making proper aftercare essential.

  3. Minimizes Scarring: Consistent care minimizes scabbing and scarring, ensuring that your tattoo heals smoothly and retains its intended appearance.

  4. Accelerates Healing: Following aftercare guidelines promotes faster healing, allowing you to enjoy your tattoo sooner without complications.

Aftercare Reminders:

  1. Cleanliness is Key: Gently wash your tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals and excessive scrubbing.

  2. Moisturize When Itchy: Apply a recommended tattoo aftercare lotion or fragrance-free moisturizer to keep the tattooed area hydrated when excessively itchy. This prevents excessive dryness and cracking.

  3. Avoid Sun Exposure: Shield your tattoo from direct sunlight, especially during the initial healing stages. UV rays can fade colors and irritate the healing skin.

  4. Say No to Scratching: Itching is a common part of the healing process, but refrain from scratching. Instead, lightly tap or pat the itchy area.

  5. Loose Clothing is Best: Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo to prevent friction and irritation.

  6. Stay Hydrated: Adequate hydration supports overall skin health and aids in the healing process.
